Established in 1969, this POISON CONTROL HOTLINE is run under the supervision of Dr. Oehme, DVM and Professor
of Toxicology and Pathology at Kansas State University.
Dr. Oehme offers these suggestions for using this FREE Hotline:
1. Be Patient. The student answering the phone may have to take a few minutes to consult with the supervising
veterinarian
2. CALL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! DO NOT WAIT TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY ADVERSE REACTIONS TO WHATEVER YOUR PET HAS
INGESTED! Every second counts! DO NOT DELAY IN SEEKING HELP!
3. Gather any empty bottles, tubes or product labels so you can give as accurate and complete information
about what your pet has ingested as possible to the veterinarian.
4. KNOW YOUR PET! Excessive drooling may be a sign of poisoning but it could also mean he is just happy to
see you!
Be aware that the toxicologists on duty are also taking calls from vets about other animals and there may
be a wait time before your call is dealt with. NOTHING REPLACES QUICK ACTION BY YOUR PET'S OWN VET! Emergency services such
as this and the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline are meant to be used when YOUR vet is not available.
